Job Description: Strategic Māori Advisor and Cultural Leader

Are you passionate about providing strategic Māori advice and cultural leadership? Do you have a strong understanding of tikanga, kawa, and Te Ao Māori? The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) is seeking a Pou Tairangahau to lead the region's approach to building enduring relationships with whānau, hapū, and iwi in the Auckland region.

About the Role

This influential and strategic role will involve supporting the Operations Director for the Auckland region in engaging with whānau, hapū, and iwi. The key responsibilities include providing strategic Māori advice, leading the approach to building relational understanding with local iwi, and supporting treaty settlements in the region. The role will also require collaboration with national priorities and stakeholders.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will be driven by kaupapa, proficient in Te Reo Māori, and have a deep knowledge of tikanga and kawa. Strong relationship management skills and experience working with iwi and tangata whenua are essential. Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience in advisory roles are also highly valued.

Skills and Experience Required

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • Proven relationship management and governance experience
  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori and understanding of tikanga and kawa
  • Confidence in engaging with Te Ao Māori
  • Demonstrated advisory and senior-level experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles

Desirable qualifications include prior work with iwi, government entities, and local authorities in the Auckland region.
