Role Overview

The Senior Policy Planner position is a key leadership role that involves overseeing policy elements within the Resource Management Act 1991 framework. The primary focus of this role is to shape the District Plan, adapt to regulatory changes, and ensure the plan's functionality and integrity. As a senior leader, the role requires providing guidance, mentorship, and collaborating closely with the Team Leader – District Planning.

Responsibilities of the Role

  • Develop and implement policies, plans, and strategies under the Resource Management Act and Local Government Act, with a focus on the District Plan.
  • Lead public consultations on policy matters on behalf of the Council.
  • Maintain high standards of customer service in policy development by engaging with stakeholders and coordinating with internal and external entities.
  • Mentor staff on policy development issues for their professional growth.
  • Contribute to strategies, plans, and bylaws within the Planning & Policy Group.
  • Manage contracts and consultants as needed for duty fulfillment.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate for this role should possess:

  • At least 5 years of experience in policy planning.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in resource management or equivalent.
  • Experience with Environmental Court procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Resource Management Act and Local Government Act.
  • Membership in the New Zealand Planning Institute or related professional organizations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster collaboration.
  • Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
