A unique opportunity is available for an Island Manager and Assistant Island Manager at Rotoroa Island in Auckland. Rotoroa Island, a privately owned wildlife sanctuary, is seeking dedicated individuals to join their team and continue the conservation efforts on the island.

About Rotoroa Island

Located in the southern Hauraki Gulf, Rotoroa Island is an 80-hectare sanctuary managed by the Rotoroa Island Trust and owned by the Salvation Army. The island underwent extensive restoration in the mid-2000s, including native tree planting, eradication of animal pests, and translocation of native species.

Roles Available

There are two roles available: a full-time manager position and a part-time assistant manager position. The roles require individuals who are hardworking, organized, and passionate about the outdoors. Managing people, leading by example, and experience in operating power boats are essential attributes for these roles.

Responsibilities

  • Managing seasonal staff, volunteers, and contractors
  • Developing and implementing work programs within budget
  • Visitor liaison, hospitality, and managing island facilities
  • Grounds maintenance, rubbish management, and cleaning
  • Biosecurity and weed management
  • Native species and emergency management
  • Record-keeping and office administration

Requirements

The ideal candidates must be able to live in a semi-remote location, handle multiple challenges, and commit to a minimum 2-year contract. Experience in managing people, operating machinery, and maintaining infrastructure is necessary for these roles.
