Located in the stunning outer Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island, also known as Aotea, is a remote island with a permanent population of just 950 people. Over 60% of the island is under the care of the Department of Conservation (DOC), including the Aotea Conservation Park, offering 12,000 hectares of native forest and special landscapes. Accommodation options are available for successful applicants, providing a unique work/life experience.

Role Overview

As the Operations Manager for the Aotea/Great Barrier District, you will be responsible for managing significant biodiversity, visitor, and historic assets within the district. This leadership role involves collaborating with Treaty partners, community trusts, and local stakeholders to advance conservation efforts and support initiatives like the Tū Mai Taonga Project for a predator-free island. You will play a key role in developing social, cultural, and economic opportunities for the island and its community.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a background in conservation management or equivalent transferable skills in operations delivery, coupled with strong leadership and relationship management capabilities. Experience working with Treaty partners, community groups, iwi, and other stakeholders is essential. Understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and demonstrating cultural competence are also key requirements for this role.

Skills and Experience

Key skills for this position include motivating teams, setting clear objectives, providing feedback, and fostering an inclusive culture. Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, collaborating on cross-functional initiatives, and aligning work plans with DOC's overall strategy are crucial aspects of the role.

What’s in it for You?

Joining the Department of Conservation offers the opportunity to lead a team dedicated to preserving New Zealand's unique biodiversity and recreation landscapes. DOC is committed to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment where everyone can thrive and grow. If you are passionate about making a difference in conservation and operational management, this role provides a rewarding opportunity.

How to Apply

If you believe your skills and experience align with the requirements of the role, submit your application online via the DOC Careers Centre. Provide a CV and cover letter highlighting your relevant background, skills, and motivation for joining Te Papa Atawhai.
