About the Role

Christchurch City Council is on a mission to transform Ōtautahi Christchurch into a city of endless opportunities, welcoming innovation and diversity. The council is seeking a Chief Executive to champion this vision, leading a team of 3,000 individuals towards a future of prosperity for the region's residents, communities, and economy. Key responsibilities of the role include:

• Providing strong leadership and enhancing organizational culture
• Strengthening the organization's brand and reputation
• Implementing the Long Term Plan successfully
• Managing the Council's financial position and performance effectively
• Advocating for climate change action within the Council and the community
• Building robust relationships with stakeholders and key partners
• Overseeing the delivery of key capital projects and water service management

Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate for the Chief Executive position will have a proven track record in providing strategic leadership, fostering high-performing teams, and delivering value-for-money services. Essential skills and experience include:

• Experience leading complex organizations
• Strong understanding of Local Government in New Zealand
• Excellent communication and emotional intelligence
• Community service orientation and collaboration skills
• Ability to work effectively with key stakeholders and mana whenua
• Experience in roles with public and media scrutiny

About the Council

Christchurch City Council is composed of a Mayor and 16 elected councillors, operating with a community governance model that includes six community boards. The Council oversees a diverse range of functions and Council Controlled Organizations (CCOs), making it one of the most comprehensive councils in New Zealand. The financial landscape presents challenges, including increased debt servicing costs and asset renewal requirements, which the Council navigates with strategic planning and prudent management.
